Avia

The area owes its current name to the mythical king of Messinia, Cresfondi, who renamed it, after the conquest of the Peloponnese by the Dorians, in honor of Abia, daughter of Hercules and nurturer of Hercules and Dianeira, son of Allus (or Γλήνου). Abia, persecuted by the Achaeans, had taken refuge in this place to save the baby, founding a temple in honor of her father.

Historic location

From the time of the traveler Pausanias (2nd AD) until the beginning of the 15th century, when in the place of ancient Avia we find the seat of the Venetian barony of Mantineia with the homonymous castle, every trace of the area is lost in the written sources and the only reference, about the ancient past and not its present, is found in Ptolemaic maps.

The operation of the Asclepieion in the city is known from antiquity, which was probably destroyed in some of the barbaric raids that plagued the Peloponnese in the early Byzantine (4th-6th century) period. The present church of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary was built on its ruins in 1775.

Other monuments of Avias that have been declared historical sites are the Holy Temples of Agios Charalambos, Agios Dimitrios, Ag. Nikolaou and Evangelismou, as well as the building of the old olive mill in the mansion owned by Frangouli.

The sights of the area also include the church of Agios Georgios in a panoramic position, the gorge of Santava, the vast olive grove of the hinterland and the beautiful beaches of Archontiko, Koukkinos, Lykotropia, Paliochora, Portela, Patsouros, Poliana, Poliana.
